Getting ready for my day!

I have no idea what today holds!  Sure I know that Gloria is coming to work and that Joan Gohn and I are going to lunch but that is all I know now!  We await the mystery of the day!

Yesterday I got dressed and put on the new shirt that Sara sent me for Easter and I went to store with Mark!  We fought with Broadway Prescription about my medicine!  Lana Richmond came by to pick up my urn, Matt Porter came for me to look over his resume and Karel Edgar came to fix the fountain!

And phone calls all day including one from Lew Hill who coached Oklahoma in Sweet 16 last week and wants to come back here as head coach and Chief of Police in St Louis who wanted to know where Jims picture was!  James took it to him after I called him!

Palm Sunday and good news!

Last night at Baptist Student Center we carried Palm fronds and had a processional complete with violin and trumpet!  It was a joyous way to welcome Christ into our hearts on Holy Week!

I started my day with a call from Andrea Stacy telling me about her exciting plans to move to Boston and ended it with a call from Sara about exciting plans about Colin!  God has had his hand on our family and I thank him for his faithfulness.

My Besties

Yesterday Bev Hickam and I went out to Gordonville Grille with Debbie Bickings to celebrate her birthday!  It was so easy and fun!  We just ate and laughed at the other ones quirks!  Debbie wants to please so she won't make a decision, Bev is into making decisions and knowing they are correct and I am on a tear about something or either don't give a rip!

But it's easy and comfortable and I am always happy to be with my Besties!

Sweet Sixteen!

Not me!  Even my grandchildren are older than 16.  But I got interested this year and watched it last night when Oklahoma played (and lost by 4 points) to Michigan.  Why?  Because Kirt Cochran called me and said that Lew Hill who coached with Shumate at SEMO was asst. coach at Oklahoma and he was interested in coming back as head coach here and we need someone who can rock out the Show Me Center again!

Dobbins presumably has said that Shumate will never go into the Hall of Fame as an individual while he is President but hallelujah he won't be President after June and the meeting is already set with the Hall of Fame Committee.  How dare him be so childish!

I have a heart for athletics being a coaches wife and being the First Lady here!   We are ready to make it happen again!   So come in and interview, Lew, and you are a winner in our minds!

Mama Cooper's Wall Tour

I am in Sikeston at Missouri Delta Hospital with Dr. Edwin Smith, former professor of art at Semo!  Marcie Lawson and I gave him the tour of the Pediatrics Unit and "Mama Cooper's wall" and he was mightily impressed!

All this and a back ache!

The weather always affects my back and so does the fact that I had Mark pull
My stove out while he was doing my stairs and it was nasty on the side and I scrubbed it with steel wool!  I am feeling the effects today!   I kept up with everything yesterday and it was a full day!

I went to the Heart to Heart exhibit with Loretta Prater and the speech and luncheon and then Lana Flynn Richmond picked me up and we went to see Greg Brune at Arena to talk about heavy matters;  she brought me home and I took calls from Kirk Cochran about a resume for head coach here and then Joy and Matt came by and told me joy had a job and is moving to Kansas City!

Dr Kim speaker

Railings on stairs complete!

Mark and Gayla Spinks came over and, in one day, I now have railings on both sides of the steps from the floor to the top and I feel safer and like them!  All that remains is to have Gayla come back today and finish the rub with a brown bag.  I like it and I like not having to reach up when I ascend and don't have to use the spindles at the top for support!

I am ready to buy my chains?

Okay, I have set back and done nothing and said nothing for years while the current President refused, apparently, to live in Wildwood and built dorms all around the place!  Then I did not say a word as historic houses were torn down and Wildwood became a free hotel!

But then it came home to roost on me.  Jeanine Hager gave me some photos of the dedication of the Pearl Scully garden and I passed them on to Roxie in Kent Library and she had no idea where it was so I took her over to see a shamble of unkempt mess!  The stone lantern given by Arai family was in pieces on the ground!  But I had pictures of it all in my cookbook and I thought of Charlie Kornd and all his work and it hit me!  What if these people who are only concerned with their legacy target this winery for the next demolition target!

I am getting my chains ready for that fight and chartering the bus to go see the governor!   You have struck a nerve!  I will not go silently this time, you have touched something sacred to me!  Now get the place cleaned up for the new President to live and clean up the Pearl Scully Garden and remember the past!

Making progress on house!

Mark and Gayla Spinks bought the stuff by for the rails today and stored them in the garage and they will install the railings tomorrow and it will take one or two days!

Then John Welch came by about the leakage into the house!  The drains were clogged and there were four cracks in the foundation!  He will have to dig down and repair and is sending me an estimate!

House problems

Talked to both of my sons yesterday and they both asked the same questions:  did John Welch come to check the leak in the dining room and did Mark Spinks come to put a double railing on the steps!  The answer is they are both coming this week!   That means I have to be here and answer questions which are beyond my reality!

Thank goodness I can schedule other people so I don't have to spend the week watching Ted Cruz announce for President and the guy from Illinois who sold his home to a donor $600, 000 above market value!  Or the miracle of the blood by Pope Francis!  The world is really bizarre now but there is not an. Alternative!   So I will continue cooking on Sunday nights and being a friend to those who come in!

Authorship of Forgiveness Article

Was in today's Missourian author: Rob Hurtgen, columnist!

Don't be a gazelle! It's not worth it in the end!

Today is Sunday and it's a sermon day --to me and to you.   It's all about a gazelle!

At some point, you will need to give and receive forgiveness

Sunday, March 22, 2015
There are two universal truths when it comes to forgiveness.
The first is you have done something to someone for which you need to be forgiven.
The second is similar; someone has done something to you that you need to forgive.
There is no way to get around it. At some point in your life, you will need to receive and extend forgiveness. One is easier to do than the other.
African gazelles easily can jump over a 10-foot fence. When you see them in the zoo, though, you will notice they are entrapped behind a 6-foot wall.
Why would an animal that could jump a fence much higher choose to remain in a life of captivity?
The answer lies not in what the gazelles can do, but in what they cannot see.
African gazelles will not jump if they cannot see where they are going to land. So a zoo can construct 6-foot walls around African gazelles because they know they cannot see the other side and will not jump the wall.
They are held back by what they could easily conquer.
The fear of a possible lion or other predator waiting for them on the other side of the wall keeps them in captivity.
It becomes easier to live in captivity than risk the possible dangers of freedom.
Most of us approach seeking forgiveness in the same manner.
We know we want our relationships restored. We know we want our friendships back.
What keeps us in captivity is not our ability to seek and extend forgiveness, but our fear of what will happen when we jump the wall. If I go to them and ask for their forgiveness, they may consume me.
If I go and forgive them, they may devour me. This leaves us trapped.
Jesus, teaching on prayer in Luke 11:4a, says, "and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us." In other words, those who have been forgiven practice the art of forgiveness.
Forgiveness is a gift we receive and a gift we extend.
We are left with a daily choice: Do we receive and then extend forgiveness, or do we remain behind the wall -- separated from God and from each other?

Soles for Souls and CDs!

Yesterday was packed and I feel gratitude when that is the case!  I know I am alive and kicking!  First, Tom Harte came by with a big bag of shoes for Soles for Souls for people who don't have shoes and then Mark Hoffmeister came with the CDs of Julia's party and I saw it for the first time!  What a family treasure it is!  I am so glad that I moved heaven and earth to get this done!

Jay Wolz did it for me and I will never be able to adequately thank him and I told him that!

Every days a party!

I started out the day with lunch with Dr Jeff Long from Chateau and then we had a meeting with Keith Boeller, CFO at Chateau which was excellent!  Had a great time!

Then came home and Raphael Pellenard, my endowed scholarship recipient, wanted to bring a meal over to Grandma and we sat down to eat and Dr Wanda Pipkin came in to pick up sheets with two students from Bangladesh and we got out more plates!  We just expanded the table!  What a fun life I am privileged to live!

Telephone is hot today!

The rumors are flying today:  Southeast is tearing down Shivelbine house on campus,  where can people take shoes and sheets they want to donate, did a big hospital buy out Southeast Health and I've heard Barnes, st Anthony's and Mercy, and did I break anything and have I called anyone to make the steps safer?

My answers:  yes the Shivelbine house is going, you can bring sheets and shoes to my house, I hear rumors about Se health and I believe the Board is trying to get out of its financial pit, and I will have my steps fixed next week!   Last time to see my steps as they were!

Soles for Souls

I went to dinner last night with Matt Porter and Carole Robinson and we talked about gathering shoes which we are gathering for third-world!  They say every woman has nine pairs of shoes in her closet she never wears!  Last year I gave them thirty pairs!   It is a wonderful ministry and I am proud to be a part of it!

I love being active and expanding my world.  I thought I had a wide circle in Cape but my circle of friends have widened.  Matt Porter and Carole are dear to me!

I'm pooped!

Friday was Julia's party!  Saturday was Judy Brown's party and yesterday was my St Patricks party for retired faculty and staff.  And they were all successes and fun but I am pooped!  Over 100 attended the party yesterday and it was a raving success!

Monday, March 16, 2015

In the Alumni Center today..

I am hosting a st Pats brunch for retired faculty this morning and we have 110 people coming!  I feel old when I see the signage hanging in the building!  Jay Wolz and Trudy Lee greeted me as I thanked them for helping at Charleston!  Jay did the video and I can't wait to see it!

It will be a wonderful day!

Friends and 75

Yesterday I went to Judy Brown's 75th birthday at her sister, Cherie Herbst!  It was a great party and I ate and ate!  So much fun to celebrate with friends!  Judy and Joan Gohn and I enjoy each other's company!  We get up and go and ignore the aches that come with living!

Go get them, Judy!

Julia Warren was 90 yesterday!

And we had a birthday to write home about!  The Mayor proclaimed it Julia Cooper Warren Day! The musicians from Semo were tremendous and Dr Kevin Hampton played the hymns our parents loved and Dr Trudy Lee sang Hello Young Lovers!  Dr Bruce Gentry talked about A b Cooper Ministries and Marcie Lawson talked about Mama Cooper's Wall!

And then we made two more announcements:  the Betty Cooper Hearnes scholarship at Semo, Lst scholarship for a person going into church music and the announcement by Bob Hearnes that The portrait of Dr Jim Cooper will hang permanently at the St Louis Police Academy!  What a special day we had!

Going out among 'email

I don't do well staying home day after day!  So at first chance, I got dressed and went out with Cindi Hawke to Milk and Honey, a new Russian Restaurant in town, to eat and celebrate Cindi's new job!   We both loved our food and Cindi made some delicious muffins for me!

How lucky I am to have such wonderful friends!

Women in power Conference

Went to the Women in Power Conference yesterday and had a great time. 450 women and I knew most of them!  Enjoyed the day and sitting with Cheryl Mothes at Ed Jones Table!  Karla Bakersmith from Sikeston was the speaker!  It was fun!  Jayne Schrader said she was beating me getting this on Fb!  And she did!

Dr Kasten says I am on the mend!

Went to see Dr Kasten yesterday!  Thought I would get a semi- lecture about how terrible my steps are since we lived in same neighborhood!  But all he said was a derisive "Did they X-ray your head?" And I responded that he should not even go there?  Mark does show me more respect than his father, Mel, ever did!  It would be impossible not to!

So I am lucky and healing!  Good enough for me!  Can you imagine anyone keeping a list of aches and pains to discuss with a doctor!  When I am there, my only thought is how fast can I get out!

Doing better

Going to doctor this morning!  Gloria is here!  You know I am better when I am going out to eat with Matt and Joy!

Monday, March 9, 2015

Better get in gear today!

I have to check out details for Julia's party today and I'm getting those things done!  I have a doctors appt tomorrow with Mark Kasten and I am noticing a few bruises I hadn't seen but I am fine and I am the mother of a doctor!

People have been wonderful to jump in and help and I am so grateful!  Joy is coming to spend the night again and then I will be fine!   Julia is going to have a world class celebration in the style she likes!

A Hospital Type of Day!

Yesterday was a strange day! First, I get a call my granddaughter Andrea is in the hospital. She was bitten by a monkey at her job. Mark and Tina drove all night to be by her side. She should be released today after testing. Then, I fell down the stairs at 10 PM last night. My wrist and knee hurt, so Matt Porter took me to the ER to be checked out. After a tetnis shot and some X-rays I am back home. I'm lucky no broken bones they could see! I have to follow up with my family doc this week. Thankfully, Debbie Bickings stayed with me over night and now I have Heather here watching out for me!

Saturday, March 7, 2015

Bev Hickam is 62 today!

Last night I went to the Branding Iron at Jackson to celebrate Bev Hickams birthday!  We had such a good time with
Debbie Bickings and Barb Kinsey!  These are long ties that eternally bind!  Debbie has been doing my hair for many years since she started in hairdressing school! Bev worked for me when I took the alumni job and stayed for ten years and Barb worked across the hall in Wayne Norton's office!

What great times we continue to have!

Julia Cooper Warren Birthday

Hard at work planning the 90th birthday celebration for Julia Cooper Warren.

I have two people coming in to work today!

Kathleen and Mark are both coming in today and if I don't get caught up today, I will not make it!  Kathleen can do errands and research and Mark can do the program for Julia's birthday party and then, I can breathe again!  I know Julia will like the focus being on her!  And she deserves it!  It is her day!

Snow is everywhere!

No need to get up early and get dressed!  I won't be getting out today!  I did not leave the house yesterday!  And I'm getting pretty tired of being alone with me and the newscasters of msnbc and cnn!  I might even watch Fox today!

New President at Semo University

We have a new president and a new person in the Office!  I wish him well and I welcome change!  He will add his own stamp and personality and interests!  People are excited about the change , especially the faculty!

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

President of University named tomorrow

I went out for breakfast with Trudy Lee and Betty Sewel this morning.  She was married to Lou Sewell who taught in the Math Department at Semo!   The big news is that the new President is announced tomorrow!  I think I am the only one around who does not care who it is!  I know nothing about any of the candidates!  I care about the students who turn into alumni!  I want the teachers to teach something and the degree to be worth something!

I have many presidents make good decisions and bad ones and the university survived!

Planning a party for sister Julia

She is 90 on March 13 and I think she ought to have a party and we are having one!  Now I have to get it together and make it happen!  And is it going to be something!  She is so thrilled by it all !

For starters the Mayor has proclaimed it Julia Cooper Warren Day. And Julia has given me her list of favorites for the mini concert the semo Music Dept is doing!  It will be a whammo!

March 13 put on your calendar

Julia warrens 90th birthday and I am coming to charleston with some news that will knock your socks off!  If I were you I would plan to be there!   You won't ever guess the news!

Saturday coffee with Greg Brune

Yesterday Greg picked me up, at my request, and we headed for Rhodes!  I had heard of rumor of something big coming down and I wanted to tell him what I had learned!  We worked together for 18 years and started mornings with coffee and gossip!  We are comfortable old shoes together!  And we both protect each other's back!

Nothing has changed since we both retired except our daily meetings!  Some people go thru their entire work career and never have one person they trust with their back!  I'm lucky!  He would say the same!
