Saturday and lots to do!

It's Saturday and I'm staying home and making every minute count!  I have to clean closets and get ready for winter.  And no one else can do that!  I have on old clothes and I am getting rid of stuff I have not worn in years! I am on a deck utter rampage!

Thanks, Laurie, for the card!  You always put thought in everything!  Never just throw something in the mail! You are very special!  The card makes you think!

My face is still hurting!

Yes my face is still hurting from laughter!  I hosted birthday party for Nancy Bray yesterday at Katy's downtown and we spent nearly three hours laughing!  Bierk was there so war was declared early!  He is now on soapbox to boo me when I am inducted into Semo Athletic Hall of Fame because I cannot even throw a ball!  I just bring it up and rub it in every time we are together to rub it in worse!  I love to use my sadistic streak on him!

Keeping busy with friends

Yesterday was a busy day and I enjoyed every minute of it! I went to lunch with Tammy Baldwin and Henry Sessoms for Tammys birthday and then I hosted a "cookie party" for Tom and Jane Harte and Sandy Moore last night and we drank champagne and ate Egg Nog cookies!  Tom is doing an article on Sandy since she is the Cookie Lady from Baptist Student Center!  Jane even brought me a yardstick from Hearnes for Governor Days!

Bray Birthday

I went out to Chateau for Alton Brays birthday and had a fine time!  Alton was thrilled and I ran into John Burciaga who was in college with me and who knew Alton also!  We had a merry old time and then I went back to Baptist Student Center and we worked until six last night!  I can't say I am not needed!  I can't say I am not tired this morning!

A Bangladesh Evening

It was a Bangladesh night filled with food and culture and the women who cooked nailed it!  The potato latkes were spiced with coriander and were wonderful!  Matt Porter slipped into chapel and asked me if I had any eggs in my refrigerator and could he go get them!  He knows the code and he went!   And the big news was that Aron and Angelia's father is new Sri Lankan advisor to UN!

Sikeston Hospital Benefit

Went down to Sikeston Hospital Benefit last night and had a fun time!  Sat with Max Heeb and Judge Blanton and greeted people all night including Becky Sharp who catered it and Max who made a place for Jim Cooper in surgery each summer!  The first big event Becky did was my wedding in Charleston in 1958!  She is ninety years old and still going strong!

The circle makers

I'm reading a book by Mark Batterson and I was taken by one line:  "in the words of Harriet Doerr 'One of the best things about aging is being able to watch imagination overtake memory"!  She wrote her first book when she was 74 and it won the National Book Award!   I try diligently to keep striving!  I like to visit the past but I do not want to take up residence there!

I finally feel better

I got out among them today and used my brain for something useful!   People came by!  Carol Robinson brought me caramels that were homemade!  I worked on Fb so that Alton Bray will hear from old friends on his 96th birthday!  I have to feel that i am doing something for someone!

24 hour bug

It hit me yesterday and I spent more time in bathroom than on Fb!  Hoping today will be better!  No other news!

Homecoming, 2015

Hallelujah it is over!   I think God is telling me that I should stay away from now on and do something which does not leave me feeling so down-hearted.  All my moments of joy came from alumni rushing up to hug me.  They introduced every politician around and no one at any event bothered to introduce me or give me an ounce of credit for a lifetime of work!  Bill Stacy and wife showed up and they were quick to introduce him!  Then I slipped at stadium and had to have  Dr Robinson and Carol bring me home!  One woman thought I had died since I hadn't been introduced at the dinner!

I am really down in the dumps!  I want to throw in the towel!  The whole weekend lies sadly in my brain and every muscle in my back hurts!  At least I can take something and forget the ugly parts,  or, at least, get some sleep!

Dinner at home

Dr Audrey Reynolds from Chicago is staying with me!  We had dinner at my house last night with the Hartes and John Bierk!  John had heard that I was inducted into Semo Athletic Hall of Fame and he said he would lead the booing system that night!  Tom brought cheesecake!  Yum!

It's Homecoming week! I'm still alive! Have worn read an black for four days!

It's my personal tradition!  Won't break it now!   Starting today, I will have weekend visitors and one event after another and I will have to remember names!  I love this time of people hugging!  And I dress for it!

Betty Hearnes Scholarship winner wins Semo Talent Show

I love working with my eight scholarship recipients!  They take me into their life and I do the same!  And they want me there when they perform and I go!

Last night I went up to a long talent show  at the Show me Center and  Hannah Sherer won it!   She is the first recipient of the Betty Cooper Hearnes Music Scholarship and she is singing the National Anthem at the football game on Saturday!   I'm proud of her!

Reconciliation

One of the highlights of my brunch yesterday was when Lana Flynn- Richmond came back and visited with the President and told him that I kept reminding her that this was her school and her legacy and no one can ever take that away from her! The university belongs to all of us who wish to claim it and a pox on those who try to declare their supreme ownership!

Lana, I am so proud of you and all the others who have stood their rightful ground!

It's Homecoming Week!

Love it still!  We kicked it off this morning with a "Getting to Know you" brunch for retired faculty and staff brunch which was wonderful and fun!   We welcomed our new Semo president, Carlos Vargas, in a big way!   Happy Homecoming everyone!

Annie's wedding

I had a good time at Annie Finnegans wedding yesterday and it was a gorgeous day in the park for a wedding!  The three kids were all dolled up and Allen gave his sister away!   Small wedding but meaningful and sweet!

Debbie Bickings

For more years than I can count Debbie Bickings has come by my house twice a week to do my hair and we have looked into the mirror and talked!  We are each other's sounding mirror!

Yesterday I went to shop to have a weave done and my eyebrows done!  Then we went to Marios to eat!  There is nothing I could ask her to do that she wouldn't try to do!  She is my daughter in residence!  I'm lucky!

Running around living!

Yesterday I had a meeting where I had to decide if I was going to share information that had grave implications or if I was going to go blissfully on my way!  I chose the former!  And I am glad!  Age does not relieve you of responsibility!

So I spent the afternoon getting my nails done--bright red for Homecoming--and buying new red and black clothes for Homecoming and buying football tickets! Then going to Pilot House with Joan Gohn and Genie Kremer and then going to Central High for their concert!  I live every day and I am happy for it!

I need coffee to think things through!

Meeting at house today that is important!  What should I say and what should I hold back?   These decisions affect lives!  I have to be right on target or lose credibility!  When does confidentiality become second to greater good?  It may be today!   I have a lot of thinking to do before 10:00!

Miss Mary

I went to PEO Brunch with Mary Ellen Sharp yesterday and Mary Kasten was there.  She was long-time neighbor and friend and sorta nuts!  She walked to the tune of a different drummer!  My son, Jim, could do a mean impersonation of her!

Get ready for fall!

I spent yesterday getting ready for fall!  Karel came and decorated the house and yard and then took me to the eye doctor, Dr Wood!  He took pics of the back of my eyeball, pronounced that I was fine and said that I was fine and he would see me in a year!

It made me think of all the cycles of living that we do.  Some are seasonal and some are annual, we just do it because it is time!

Indian night - a huge success!

Over 150 came last night to A b Cooper ministries for Indian Night!  The students stayed up all night cooking the food!  I took two bites;  they must have steel stomachs!   But it was a mob of students

Happy birthday Leigh Hearnes Hammond!

Love this picture and display it in my living room all the time!  You were and are such a shy cutie!  Happy birthday, Screwhead!

Chinese festival

Last night Carol Robinson and I went to the Chinese Festival and Lo and behold Lu Yan was there!  She was my scholarship recipient and then she graduated and moved to Houston!  That girl is something else!  How I wish she would move back here!

Til, a true neighbor!

I read in the paper this week of the death of Frances Sue Moran from Charleston and it caused me to reflect on Mama's porch swing upon which many problems have been discussed, if not solved!  Chief among sitters was Til Moran, Frances Sue's mother, who lived across the street and was a daily visitor!  The two of them adopted each other mentally and they sat  in the swing and watched their world and the cars and years go by.

I love the memories of that old porch swing!

Still remembering

Julia and Betty had not seen our two cousins in years and it was a joyous reunion,  reminded me of a more peaceful and loving past!   Mary Lou Lawrence and her family had lived in Diehlstadt where she was the star basketball player winning over 100 consecutive games!
